post-mortem analysis

Cell openings of lithium-ion cells, regardless of their format (cylindrical, pouch, prismatic), can be ordered from us for assessment and sampling. We cooperate with the Chair of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems at RWTH Aachen University (ISEA) and other institutions located in Aachen and linked to RWTH Aachen.

The battery engineers have access to a laboratory equipped with several gloveboxes that allow cell openings and sampling under inert gas atmosphere by our experienced and our skilled staff.

Possible further analyses include light and laser microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersed X-ray spectroscopy (SEM & EDX) and computed tomography (CT).

Furthermore, we also perform openings on other cell chemistries, especially lead-acid batteries. In this process, the battery or cell is first opened, e.g. with a band saw, and then various parameters (single cell voltage, single cell resistance, electrolyte density, etc.) are determined in addition to an optical assessment. This enables us to determine and precisely document the aging condition or the manufacturing quality.
